Steamboat Opens Mahogany Ridge and Fish Creek Canyon to Freeriders
Steamboat finishes its multi-year Full Steam transformation, debuting 650 acres of steep glades, cliff bands, and technical hike-to lines in Fish Creek Canyon.
Long celebrated for its gentle family cruisers and buoyant Champagne Powder glades, Steamboat Ski Resort has dramatically expanded its expert profile with the full opening of Mahogany Ridge and Fish Creek Canyon.
The 650-acre terrain addition represents the largest single in-bounds expansion in Colorado in recent seasons, lifting Steamboat to the second largest ski resort in the state behind only Vail.
A Shift in Mountain Character
Mahogany Ridge is accessed via a dedicated high-speed quad that spins out of the base of the canyon. From the lift terminus, advanced skiers can drop into steep north-facing pine and aspen glades or hike out along the ridgeline into Fish Creek Canyon.
Fish Creek Canyon is designated as extreme in-bounds terrain, featuring 40-degree fall lines, mandatory cliff features, tight tree chutes, and natural rock drops. The canyon requires skiers to carry a dedicated trail map and emphasizes self-rescue protocols, reflecting an intentional pivot toward freeride terrain.
Lift Infrastructure and Base Upgrades
The new terrain caps off the resort comprehensive 200-million-dollar capital overhaul, which also brought the Wild Blue Gondola: the longest ten-passenger gondola in North America, transporting 3,200 skiers per hour from the revamped Steamboat Square to the summit of Sunshine Peak in under 13 minutes.
