This Maine Ikon Flagship Just Fired Snowguns While Leaves Still Peak
Sunday River ran its annual September snowmaking test on Jordan Peak trails Sept. 19. The system is ready; sustained production still waits on cold nights near 25 to 30 F.
Sunday River fired up snowguns at about 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, sending manmade snow onto Rogue Angel, Excalibur, and Lollapalooza on Jordan Peak. The Maine resort labeled the run a completed annual preseason test, not the start of continuous base building for 2026-27.
That distinction matters for destination skiers watching the East open early. Fall color is still on the mountain. Overnight temperatures have not settled into the roughly 25 to 30 degree Fahrenheit window Sunday River says it needs for serious production. Saturday's snow will not stick until opening day. What the test proves is that more than 2,000 guns, upgraded pipe, and booster capacity are online before the first real cold snap arrives.
Jordan Peak has been a focus of recent snowmaking capital. In recent seasons the resort added nearly two miles of large pipe tying the North Peak booster system to the Jordan Bowl summit, a project it says tripled water capacity in that sector. A 2025 booster pumphouse around Locke and Barker added about 2,000 gallons per minute of pumping so crews can run Jordan, Barker, and Locke at once without starving other pods. Hundreds of high-efficiency HKD guns sit across the eight-peak layout.
For 2026-27, Sunday River is also evaluating an SMI Panther fan gun, putting it among a small group of U.S. mountains testing that platform. Automated fan guns that adjust water flow as temperature and humidity shift are especially useful in New England, where a short overnight window can be the difference between a mid-November open and a late scramble.
Timing matches last year's ritual. Sunday River tested on Sept. 20 in 2025 and on Oct. 9 in 2024. Last winter the mountain opened Nov. 12. The current Ikon Pass opening calendar lists a Nov. 15 target for Sunday River, but the resort has not locked a firm date and says production can start as soon as temperatures cooperate. That keeps it in the Eastern early-open conversation alongside peers that chase the first cold blast.
