Sun Valley Just Added 50 Gladed Acres Ahead of a World Cup Rematch
Idaho classic opens Nov. 26 with new Bald Mountain glades, Christmas and Lookout lifts, and Stifel Finals returning March 20-25, 2027 for Crystal Globe races.
Sun Valley just published its 2026-27 season preview, and the headline for destination skiers is simple: more skiable trees on Bald Mountain, plus the Stifel Sun Valley Finals returning March 20-25, 2027. The resort keeps its traditional Thanksgiving open on November 26, then stacks family lodging deals, snowmaking pump upgrades, and a second World Cup Finals hosting onto the same winter.
The racing piece matters most for people who follow alpine calendars. Only the top-ranked athletes qualify for the invite-only Finals, which crown Crystal Globe champions in downhill, super-G, giant slalom, and slalom for men and women. Sun Valley hosted Finals in 2025 on the Challenger course and delivered moments that still travel: a Mikaela Shiffrin slalom win and Lindsey Vonn's first comeback podium. Bringing that circus back for March 2027 puts Bald Mountain back on the season's last big stage.
Fifty more gladed acres, and the lifts that feed them
On the mountain itself, Sun Valley is adding about 50 acres of newly gladed terrain between Christin's Silver, Leigh Lane, and Upper Broadway. That work sits on top of 90 acres finished last summer and more than 390 acres opened over six years through the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project. Harvested timber is still being routed into habitat work and Wood For Life donations for community partners, which keeps the stewardship story tied to the new lines rather than treated as a separate press note.
Uphill capacity is changing at the same time. The Christmas and Lookout Express replacements (Doppelmayr high-speed chairs already approved and under construction for this winter) are the transit story for Lookout Restaurant and the Bald Mountain summit. Skiers who have waited on older mid-mountain chairs will feel that first. Snowmaking reliability work across all four Bald Mountain pumphouses is meant to protect early-season coverage while the racing and glading headlines draw attention.
Family access and pass partners
Dollar Mountain's Sunny's Adventure Park returns for a second season with kid-focused terrain and learning features. Two lodging offers sharpen the early calendar: December Ski Free gives guests at Sun Valley Lodge or Cottages two free lift tickets per night between November 29 and December 20, and Kids Ski Free lets children 12 and under ski free with a ticketed adult on stays of three or more nights (up to two kids per day). Ikon Pass and Mountain Collective partnerships are renewed for 2026-27, so multi-resort passholders already planning Idaho can treat Bald Mountain as more than a one-weekend detour.
Before opening day, the Pray for Snow Party returns to River Run Lodge on November 7. For destination planners, the practical takeaway is a Thanksgiving open, new glade acreage you can actually ski, modernized summit access, and a March Finals week that will pack lodging.
