Winter Park is pushing another round of snowmaking hardware for 2026-27, and Alterra says the latest guns will double capacity on Lower Hughes, a key early-season corridor for opening the Front Side.
The Colorado mountain has been rebuilding its snowmaking plant from the ground up for several years. Alterra previously described a multiyear overhaul on the order of tens of millions of dollars. After the first phase, the company said energy use for snowmaking had already dropped sharply. This winter's add-on is more automated fan guns and mobile guns aimed at earlier openings and better water efficiency.
Lower Hughes is the tell
Doubling capacity on a named early run is a concrete claim destination skiers can track. When Front Range cold snaps are short, the mountain that can put a dense machine-snow base on Hughes-style terrain first is the one that posts a real opening product instead of a single ribbon photo.
