This Colorado Ikon Flagship Opens Free Rails This Weekend

Snowmass runs the Makaha Rail Park Saturday and Sunday with free lift access on stored summer snow, a pilot that kept usable snow through a warm season.

Ski news: This Colorado Ikon Flagship Opens Free Rails This Weekend

Snowmass is putting skiers and riders back on snow this weekend, months before its normal 2026-27 opening. Aspen Snowmass will run the Makaha Rail Park on Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, with free access for eligible passholders and complimentary tickets for everyone else.

The park runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. Coney Express spins only to its mid-station. Riders load with gear, take a short walk to the rails and boxes, and stay inside the marked park. Several rails and boxes are set for a range of ability levels. There is no sightseeing access, no food and beverage service, and limited facilities, so bring water and snacks. Helmets are recommended.

Snow that survived the summer

Last April, Aspen Snowmass piled leftover snow at Snowmass and Buttermilk and covered those piles with Snow Secure insulated blankets. The pilot tested whether smaller volumes could survive a long, warm summer. Resort staff say the Snowmass pile stayed usable, so crews uncovered it and shaped the weekend park. Larger early-season stockpiles are the longer-term idea if the pilot keeps proving out.

That puts Snowmass in a small North American club experimenting with snow farming for fall sessions, not just spring cleanup. For freestyle skiers and snowboarders in the Roaring Fork Valley, it is a rare chance to hit metal before Thanksgiving crowds arrive and before full-mountain snowmaking locks an opening date.

Who rides for free

Premier, Chamber Premier, AVSC Full, Grade School and High School, and Employee and Dependent passes get lift access. Guests without an eligible pass can pick up a complimentary lift ticket at the base of Coney Express. Terrain is limited to the rail park features. Stay within ability and follow posted signs.

Snowmass remains a core Ikon Pass mountain and the biggest of the Aspen four, alongside Aspen Mountain. This weekend is not an early full-mountain open. It is a two-day freestyle preview built on stored snow. If you are already in the valley, or can swing a short drive, it is the earliest Aspen Snowmass snow session of the year, and a useful stress test of whether summer snow storage can feed more ambitious early-season plans later.
