Alta Reopens to Uphill Skiers, but One Crucial Winter Service Is Missing
Alta has reopened to uphill travel with no ski patrol and unmarked hazards. Its November 20 lift-opening target remains separate from this preseason access.

Alta Ski Area is open to uphill travel again, but there is no ski patrol. The Utah resort's October 16 update allows preseason access while explicitly treating the mountain as backcountry terrain, well before its conditions-dependent November 20 target for lift-served skiing.
The distinction matters for anyone seeing October ski photos and considering a trip up Little Cottonwood Canyon. An uphill opening provides permission to enter specified terrain under the current rules. It does not provide the services, hazard marking or rescue response that visitors associate with an operating winter resort.
Alta's official update says the Summer Road is open with access to Grizzly Gulch and Catherine's Area. Mountain equipment may be present, hazards are unmarked, and visitors must assess avalanche risk, carry avalanche equipment they know how to use, and take responsibility for their own rescue. The resort also warns that operational work and avalanche mitigation can trigger temporary closures.
Snow arrived before the lifts
SnowBrains reported the reopening on October 20, following an October 11-13 storm that brought more than a foot of snow to Alta. That early snowfall has attracted skiers willing to climb for turns. It is useful context for the October activity, rather than evidence that the normal winter operation has started.
For destination visitors, the practical question is what kind of outing they are equipped to undertake. A family arranging rentals and lessons for a lift-served holiday should continue planning around the winter opening updates. An experienced touring party needs to check the current access notice and backcountry information again immediately before leaving, rather than treating an earlier social post as standing permission.
There is also little reason to build a long-distance ski holiday around a single October access update. Preseason availability can change between booking a room and reaching the canyon. Keeping travel arrangements flexible is more useful than assuming that today's uphill status will hold through a weekend.
