Ski news: Keystone Sets Its Friday Opening, With One Important Ride at Day's End

Keystone plans to open Friday, October 30, with more than two miles of skiing on Schoolmarm and Silver Spoon. The important arrival-day detail also applies to the trip home: guests will ride the River Run Gondola both up to the open terrain and back down to the base.

The October 28 announcement puts operating hours at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mountain Time. Montezuma Express will serve laps, and a hike-to terrain park is included in the opening plan. This is a specific operating announcement after weeks of an October target, giving Front Range skiers something firmer to arrange a day around.

The gondola download is the detail to remember when picturing those first turns. The opening terrain does not mean a skiable route back to the village. Anyone coordinating a pickup, meeting friends at the base or leaving equipment in a vehicle should build the return gondola ride into the afternoon rather than assuming the last run ends beside the parking lot.

Snowmaking began October 15, according to SnowBrains' report on the opening announcement. The early start reflects a prepared corridor of terrain rather than the whole mountain coming online at once. More runs will follow as conditions allow, so a late-October visit is best approached as a chance to get back on snow and settle into the season.

There is also a separate calendar for night skiing. The resort says its evening operation begins on selected Fridays, Saturdays and holidays from Thanksgiving onward. Friday's season debut is a daytime opening; travelers should not extend that 4 p.m. finish into an assumed evening session.

Uphill access remains closed during the early season, according to the official opening announcement. A confirmed lift opening should therefore not be read as permission to skin up before the gondola starts. That distinction matters for local skiers trying to fit a workout around the first public laps.

For a Halloween-weekend trip, check the latest operating information before leaving and choose the visit around the terrain actually offered. Our Keystone guide and Epic Pass guide provide the wider resort and pass context as the winter expands beyond its opening footprint.
