This Donner Summit Resort Just Rebuilt Its Highway Gondola From Scratch

Sugar Bowl is rewriting how you arrive at its snowbound Village. The Donner Summit resort is replacing the 1983 Emerald Village Gondola with a new Doppelmayr eight-passenger system (Onyx cabins) as the centerpiece of a multi-year, roughly $100 million development push, with Ski California listing a Nov. 27, 2026 opening target weather permitting. The line still crosses Van Norden Meadow from Highway 40 into the Village, but the machinery, terminals, and cabin size are new.
Sugar Bowl's own construction updates say crews started the morning after closing day on April 6, pulled seven towers for a wider gauge that fits larger cabins, and finished highway-terminal steel and drive gear before shifting to the Village terminal. The new gondola is fully ADA accessible, and the highway building is designed to display prior gondola generations while handling bigger cabins and support carts without choking arrivals. Contemporary coverage of the project has put peak capacity near 1,800 passengers per hour, more than double the old four-passenger Emerald system's roughly 800.
More than a lift swap
Phase work around the Village Gondola also remakes the Main Lodge beginner path, expands snowmaking (including TechnoAlpin fan guns in the Athlete Zone), and refreshes terrain parks and Sugar Rush Tubing. Ticket packaging for 2026-27 includes multi-day packs starting at $99 per day on select products and a $99 first-timer package for ages 13 and up that bundles lesson, rentals, and a lift ticket.
