This Oregon Ikon Flagship Just Locked a Dec. 4 Opening Target

Mt. Bachelor is targeting Dec. 4 for the start of winter operations, president and general manager John Merriman told The Bulletin, a date that would beat last season's Dec. 23 open after one of the worst snow years in the resort's modern history.

Bachelor typically averages more than 400 inches of snow. Last winter delivered about 140 inches, which Merriman called the lowest total in 50 years and a season that cut visits and shortened the calendar. Early September already flipped the mood. The mountain saw its first snowfall on Sept. 2, then stacked roughly 18 inches over the following days, enough to push summer ops into fall hours and pause some bike trails on uncontrolled slopes.

That early snow has since melted, but Merriman pointed to returning summit cloud cover as a better tell than a single September dump. He said he fully expects totals closer to the long-term average this year if the pattern holds.

What it takes to spin lifts

Bachelor still needs at least two feet of snow plus forecasts for more snow or below-freezing temperatures before winter ops begin. That bar is standard for a Cascade volcano that leans on natural snow more than dense snowmaking grids. Destination skiers should treat Dec. 4 as a planning target, not a guarantee, the same way they read early dates at other West Coast volcanoes.

Pass pricing pressure is already on the clock. Season pass prices increase starting Oct. 1, which matters for anyone still deciding between a Bachelor-heavy itinerary and a broader Ikon Pass strategy that pairs Oregon days with other Western destinations.

Why the date matters for trip planners

A mid-December open is not the earliest Bachelor has managed. The mountain has opened in mid-November in stronger years. Relative to last winter, though, Dec. 4 is the first concrete signal that Bend-area destination weeks may start on a more normal calendar. Flight and lodging planners who shifted trips later in 2025-26 can look again at early December windows, then watch snow depth updates before locking nonrefundable pieces.

Construction crews also heard the message. Merriman said September snow reminded the mountain to wrap projects while the weather window is still open.
