This California Ikon Flagship Just Caught First Snow Ahead of Opening
Mammoth Mountain caught a light September dusting at McCoy Station and still targets Nov. 13 as California's first planned open of 2026-27.
Mammoth Mountain just got its first taste of the 2026-27 winter. A light dusting fell at McCoy Station (9,360 feet) on Monday, September 28, while the Eastern Sierra flagship continues to target Friday, November 13 as opening day. If that date holds, Mammoth will be the first California resort to spin lifts this season.
The snow was thin and high. Resort video showed white at McCoy, but the dusting had melted by Tuesday morning and the summit showed little sign of it. Still, first snow is a calendar marker for Ikon Pass holders who treat Mammoth as their California home mountain and are watching how early the Sierra can stage a base.
Why November 13 matters in California
A November 13 open would put Mammoth roughly a week ahead of Heavenly and Northstar, both pointing at November 20. Palisades Tahoe is targeting Wednesday, November 25. For Ikon travelers building a California itinerary, that gap decides whether Mammoth is a mid-November solo trip or part of a broader Tahoe swing later in the month.
Last winter already showed how flexible that target can be. Mammoth first aimed at November 14, nudged to November 15 for a forecast storm, then slipped again when high snow lines cut into early conditions. Lifts finally turned on November 20. Destination skiers should treat November 13 as a planning stake, not a guarantee.
What last season left on the table
Mammoth closed June 7 after 199 operating days and 297 inches of snow. That topped the prior winter's 286 inches, yet still sat well below the resort's roughly 400-inch average. Early Sierra snow this fall will not rewrite that deficit by itself, but it does reset the countdown for snowmaking windows and opening-pod decisions on Main Lodge and Canyon.
For passholders, the practical move is simple. Watch Mammoth's opening alerts, keep lodging refundable through early November, and compare against Tahoe openers if you need a backup weekend. Mammoth remains the California Ikon mountain most likely to deliver the state's first turns, and the September dusting at McCoy is the first public proof that the clock is running.
