This Utah Ikon Mountain Is Wiring Main Street for an Earlier Base
Solitude is adding fixed and portable snow guns along Main Street after last year's pipeline, chasing Utah's longest season toward a Nov. 20 open.
Solitude is finishing a multi-million-dollar snowmaking rebuild along Main Street for winter 2026-27, the second straight summer of serious water and gun work in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Last year's new pipeline added gravity-fed pressure. This summer crews are upgrading lines and valves, improving valve houses, and installing both fixed and portable snow guns. Three new fixed guns are already in place along Main Street.
Alterra frames the project as Solitude's bid to keep Utah's longest ski and ride season in reach, building on more than $5 million invested in snowmaking last season. The guest-facing goal is blunt: squeeze more snow out of short cold windows so early-season coverage does not stall when natural snow arrives late.
