Sierra storms arrive with heavy Pacific moisture. An atmospheric river can dump five to eight feet of snow over 72 hours, bringing high ridgetop winds before clearing to bluebird skies. The dense coastal snow builds a durable base that coats rocky chutes and cliff bands. Colder mid-winter storms drop dry powder at high elevations like Kirkwood (7,800-foot base) and upper Palisades bowls. Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is the most reliable entry portal, located 45 minutes from Truckee via Interstate 80 and one hour from South Lake Tahoe on US-395. Flying into Sacramento (SMF) or San Francisco (SFO) is an option, but I-80 over Donner Summit (7,227 feet) and Highway 50 over Echo Summit (7,377 feet) experience winter storm closures.
